The Farley Open Committee is pleased to announce our support for the family of Gavin McIntyre as the 2024 Fundraising Recipient.

Kate is a single mother of two boys, Gavin (14), Brayden (8). When Gavin was 11 in August of 2021, he complained of back pain. As the school year began the complaints became more frequent and Gavin only felt okay in a warm bath. Kate, concerned, took Gavin to the doctor who wrote the pain off as growing pains. After Gavin continued to complain, often waking up in the middle of the night in pain, she demanded blood work. On September 30, they drew blood and said it would be a few days until the results came in. The next day, the doctors called Kate and said she needed to go to CHOP immediately. They pulled Kate out of the room and explained they found cancer. They then discovered a mass the size of a melon in his back. Gavin was diagnosed with neuroblastoma and began treatment immediately by undergoing multiple rounds of chemotherapy. In April of 2022 he underwent a long and complex surgery to remove the tumor that was entangled with many veins. The cancer moved into his bone marrow and is all over his body. As a result of the treatment, he has lost some hearing and vision. He went to Sloan Kettering in NYC but was not a candidate match for CAR T-cell therapy. There are no more treatment options at this time, and they are monitoring his cancer with scans every two months.

Kate works as an admin for a restoration company and had to take 18 months off early during treatment and diagnosis. She consistently has to take time off for scans and to spend time with Gavin during tough weeks of symptom flare ups. Financial strains have only compounded over time. Kate had some early support from family and friends but has not had any further financial assistance from GoFundMe campaigns or donations over the past year. Balancing a job as a single mother, Gavin’s ongoing treatment, and the needs of her younger son has been an enormous challenge for Kate.

Despite these hardships, Gavin’s character shines brightly. He is an incredibly kind-hearted young man with a contagious sense of humor and an unwavering positive attitude. Gavin is amodel student, always concerned about keeping up with his schoolwork despite his frequent

absences for treatment. His leadership qualities are evident as he has taken on managerial rolesfor multiple sports teams within his school community, maintaining his connection to athletics even when he cannot participate directly. #Gavinwegotthis
